Old Boggy Road
From Commercial Chicken Farm to a Sustainable Family Farm
Welcome to Old Boggy Road, where sustainability and environmental consciousness are at the heart of everything we do. Our farm has already come a long way from its commercial chicken farm roots, and we are excited to share our journey with you.
When we first acquired this property in April of 2021, it was an abandon 30 acres commercial chicken farm consisting of six chicken house capable of having 50,000 broiler chickens per house and a focus solely on production. However, we saw the potential for something more. We wanted to create a farm that not only provided fresh produce and agritourism experiences but also prioritized sustainability and environmental stewardship.
One of the first steps we have taken was to restore parts of the land to its natural state. Tons of thrash and building debris is being collected and removed, evasive trees and plants are being identified and removed, underbrush is being removed, and deer food plots are being established. We plan in the future to plant additional trees and establish new wood lots with a variety of native trees that not only will provide shade and beauty but also support the local ecosystem. These trees will help to improve air quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and prevent soil erosion.
We also plan on converting some of the existing elevated pads to orchards of fruit and nut trees. These trees will not only provide a bountiful harvest of delicious produce but also contribute to the overall sustainability of the farm. By growing our own fruits and nuts, we will be able to reduce our reliance on external suppliers and minimize the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
Of course, no sustainable farm would be complete without a vegetable garden. We have plans to cultivate our own vegetable, using organic and regenerative farming practices. By avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
We have a designated future area identified where chickens can roam freely, and will be providing us with fresh eggs. These chickens will raised in a humane and natural environment, with plenty of space to forage and express their natural behaviors.
Looking to the future, we have plans to potentially introduce livestock to the farm. Build a fish pond to raise a sustainable fish population. This will further enhance our sustainability efforts by allowing us to produce our own meat and fish and reduce our reliance on external sources.
